24 HOURS IN RHODES
7:00 Early rise! I open the curtains to let in the magical Greek light. As I gaze upon the beautiful view from the balcony of my room, I enjoy the morning sea air aromas paired with that of my coffee and warm croissants’ that have just arrived.
8:00 I enjoy a second cup of coffee at “Koukos”, in the city center. An all-day restaurant & guesthouse with a very distinctive traditional – yet also “eclectic” – Greek style.
9:00 Time for my morning walk. The coastal road in front of ≪Grand Hotel≫ is one of the most beautiful routes, whether walking towards the aquarium and Mandraki Harbour to your right, or towards the picturesque church of Panormitis, built in the rocks, to your left.
10:00 I reach Monte Smith Mountain. The view is breathtaking: the sea, the ancient stadium, and the Acropolis of Rhodes, dating back to the 2.500 B.C. everything is there, in one blink of an eye! I take one or two deep breaths to embrace this unique beauty before I return back to my base.
11:00 I take off to Filerimos, a 15’ drive from the city center, south of the village of Ialysos. I am greeted in the most unexpected way by hundreds of peacocks at the entrance of the Monastery of Virgin Mary. I walk through a corridor ornated with images depicting the life of Christ, carved with copper in stone. At the end of the route, one cannot miss the huge, 18-metre-tall cross, a landmark also visible from the plane before landing on the island.
12:00 It may be noon, but I do not mind, I arm myself with a big hat and a cold bottle of water and drive to Lindos town, to visit the Castle and the Acropolis of Lindos. In order for me not to get lost on my way to the Castle, as I walk through the picturesque alleys of the village with the distinctive white houses and the pebble paved patios, I ask for directions a couple of times.
13:00 A swim in one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, in Agios Pavlos (St. Paul) is exactly what I need after my visit to the Castle.
14.00 I dip in the waters of one of the following well distinguished for their exceptional dishes, restaurants in the area: at “Tambakio”, “Melenos” or “Lindos Memories”.
15.00 Time for a “siesta” by the sea. All I need is shade and a comfortable sunbed. My first choice is “Lindos Memories”, 2km from Lindos: A place of true peace and serenity, since it is an “adults only” boutique hotel. As much as I adore children, the sound of the sea without any interferences calms my whole existence. Reservations are required. A nice alternative is «Ronda Beach Bar», not so quiet, but an elegant place for the entire family. Located in the city center, next to the casino, it offers many options for coffee, food, or drinks throughout the day!
17.00 I head off to Kallithea Springs for photos and possibly for an afternoon swim. This location retains the glamor of the “old times” cosmopolitan resort with the famous springs, thanks to the vaulted buildings, the magnificent pebble mosaics, as well as the arches and atriums surrounded by palm trees. In the center is the Rotonda – the imposing dome with ornate decoration.
19.00 It is time for a real time travel: in the Old Town! The Medieval City has a 2,400-year long history. It is one of the few inhabited medieval cities in the world, and is protected by UNESCO, as a world heritage site. It is a crossroad of cultures and history.
As I walk up the Street of the Knights towards the Palace of the Grand Master, aka «Castello», I feel like history is whispering in my ears… It is definitely worth visiting, as well as the Archeological and the Folklore Museum. Check out the visiting hours.
20.00 Ι stop at the traditional café on Socratous Str. near the Museum Square, for a Greek coffee and a sweet spoon dessert. 21.00 Time for dinner, good choices: “Alexis” for fish and for my favorite risotto with shrimp & fennel, “Petaladika” with a great variety of tasty seafood and meat dishes. For pizza lovers, “Il Borgo”, near the port.
23.00 I pay my classic after dinner visit to the “Korina Papoulis” store to admire the beautiful, branded jewelry and watches, and to “Di PiU” to see the new arrivals in women’s and men’s fashion. Do not leave the Old Town without buying a beautiful souvenir from one its colorful little shops.
01.00 Rendezvous at the Old Town’s fountain, the famous meeting point for friends to decide what to do next in the evening.
02.00 The till the morning hours nightlife begins now! Cool bars are: “Sysitio” and “Macao” or “Alter Ego” the one next to the other, with a nice crowd and good music.
05.00 If you are feeling lucky, a visit to the «Grande Albergo Delle Rose Casino» may be fun. Play with caution though and don’t get carried away, as Rhodes has way too many beautiful places to see, and every day is a day of opportunity for new adventures!
