A deep dive into Mitsis Grand Hotel history throughout the years
In 1965, the hotel joined the Astir Hotels portfolio, aligning it with some of Greece’s finest hospitality destinations. A notable moment in its history was in 1988, when it hosted the European Economic Community Summit, welcoming prominent European leaders and marking its status as a key player on the continent’s hospitality scene.
Mitsis Group, Greece’s largest privately-owned hospitality chain, leased the hotel in 1993. Under Mitsis’ management, the property flourished, benefiting from the group’s expertise in creating exceptional guest experiences. By 2018, Mitsis Group had acquired the hotel outright, solidifying their commitment to maintaining and enhancing this historic property.
To prepare for a new era, the hotel temporarily closed in November 2024 for extensive renovations as part of an ambitious €80 million investment. This transformation aims to blend the hotel’s classic elegance with cutting-edge luxury, ensuring it continues to be a top destination in Rhodes.
The grand reopening is set for 2026, when the hotel will debut as the newly reimagined Mitsis Grand Hotel. This upgrade will honour its legacy while embracing modern innovations, setting the stage for future generations to experience the charm, comfort, and distinction that have defined it for over 60 years. The Mitsis Grand Hotel’s journey reflects the evolution of Greek hospitality, from its mid-century origins to its promising future.
