ATHENS AND PIRAEUS READY TO WELCOME UEFA SUPER CUP 2023
Athens and Piraeus are ready to welcome for the first time one of the world’s largest football events, the UEFA Super Cup 2023 next month.
The Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus will host the final match between Manchester City and Sevilla on August 16 at 10pm. A total of 30,400 tickets will be sold for the event.
On August 14-15, events and celebrations will take place in the center of Piraeus, at the Municipal Theater and on Korai Square.
Greek officials underlined the importance of the event for both cities and the country. “The event confirms that the progress made and the upgraded standing of Greece is also reflected in sports with multiple benefits across sectors,” as the country is aiming to host more international sporting events in the future.
The municipality hopes to host significant sporting events in the new Panathinaikos Stadium in Votanikos to be completed in 2026.
Karaiskakis Stadium is expected to be at full capacity and “televised coverage of the event worldwide is a great opportunity to promote the city internationally and drive tourism to Piraeus while boosting the local economy.
Initially, the UEFA Super Cup 2023 was scheduled to be hosted at the Ak Bars Arena in Kazan, Russia. Following the Russia-Ukraine war, the UEFA Executive Committee stripped Kazan of hosting rights and relocated the match to the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Greece.
