Every year in Greece many cultural festivals and events are taking place, especially during the summer months. The Athens & Epidaurus Festival, set up in 1955, is alive for the last 60 summers, attracting until today large audiences from around the world.
The Festival has gained recognition through the participation of numerous Greek and world-famous performing artists like Frank Sinatra, Maria Callas, Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Luciano Pavarotti, Martha Graham and Rudolf Nureyev.
Between June and August the Athens & Epidaurus Festival is organized at various historic and modern venues across Athens and at the two ancient theatres of Herodes Atticus Theatre and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in the Peloponnese. The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is world-famous for its unparalleled acoustics and elegant aesthetics, located on the southeast end of the sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek God of medicine, Asclepius. The Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus is located at the port of ancient Epidaurus, and was built in honour of god Dionysus to host religious ceremonies.
This year, the Athenian festival activity begins at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus with Verdi's ``Nabucco`` on June 1st and closes with Bizet's ``Carmen`` on July 31st.Default value
The Epidaurus festival activity begins on June 29th with the ancient Aristophanes’ tragedy “The Acharnians” and closes on August 18th with Sophocles’ “Oedipus at Colonus”. The festival’s 2018 edition includes world-famous Greek singer Nana Mouskouri, Italian orchestra Il Pomo d’ Oro, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, British violinist Nigel Kennedy, American actor Bill Murray, rock musician Sting and many more. In between and for over a month several classic works by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes will be presented every Friday and Saturday at the Epidaurus amphitheatre. Special mention is due to Marlene Monteiro Freitas, returning to the Festival after her Athens debut last year, having recently received the Silver Lion for Dance at the Venice Biennale.
