BIODEGRADABLE STRAWS
All these facts have led to the sensitization of governments, companies and citizens. Various organizations have been founded in order to take measures to reduce the consumption of plastic. Recycling has become part of most peoples’ everyday routine and even from their early years children are learning its importance at school.
The main differences between a biodegradable and a plastic straw is the time they need to break down if subjected to the proper conditions and their cost. A biodegradable straw can be compostable within 180 days, while a plastic one would need years. Let’s also not forget that biodegradable straws are made by inexpensive and renewable products.
As more and more companies in the hospitality and F&B industries are changing their habits, Mitsis Hotels could not be an exception. Apart from replacing plastic with biodegradable straws, we have adopted and implemented other responsible policies as well, with a view to minimizing our environmental footprint. A comprehensive recycling program for paper and packaging materials, glass, plastic, aluminum, electric appliances, biowaste, used oils, soaps, inks and toners, in cooperation with certified suppliers has been implemented and special recycling bins have been installed throughout the length of the beaches, while the hotels’ guests are urged to participate in our recycling efforts.
