
GREECE AIR TRAFFIC UP 86% IN 2021, ATHENS AIRPORT LEADS THE WAY
AIA, Greece’s largest airport, was among the Top 10 airports in the EU recording the largest increase in passenger traffic up by 52 percent and ranking 8th. Palma de Mallorca, Spain was in the lead with a 137 percent rise.
According to the data, in 2021, the Top 5 EU airports were: Paris/Charles de Gaulle (26.2 million passengers), Amsterdam/Schiphol (25.5 million), Frankfurt/Main (24.8 million), Madrid/Barajas (23.2 million) and Barcelona/El Prat (18.5 million).
Overall in 2021, 373 million passengers traveled by air in the EU up by 35 percent compared with 2020, after the strong decline of 73 percent compared with pre-pandemic 2019.
According to data, all EU countries in 2021 apart from Finland (-16 percent), registered an increase in the number of passengers traveling by air compared with 2020. Greece recorded an 86 percent rise, Ireland (+10 percent), Sweden (+16 percent), Latvia (+17 percent), Cyprus (+105 percent) and Croatia (+129 percent).
