
Greece shines at the World Travel Awards 2024
Greece claimed the accolade for “Europe’s Leading Destination 2024” at the 31st World Travel Awards (WTA) Europe Gala Ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin that revealed the continent’s best of the best across all sectors of the tourism industry. Greece had won the same title in 2021 and 2006.
Launched in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence in tourism, the WTA brand today is recognized globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.
The awards are known worldwide as the “Oscars of the travel industry” and votes are cast by travel professionals and high-end tourism consumers.
With regard to Greece, the WTA 2024 Europe gala ceremony saw the country scoop the title of “Europe’s Leading Destination 2024”; Athens hailed as “Europe’s Leading City Break Destination 2024”; and 12 Greek hotels receive European distinctions. Highlights for Greece also included Domes Resorts named “Europe’s Leading Resort Brand 2024” and also collecting another four European distinctions for its hotels on Crete and Corfu; and Mideast Travel Worldwide applauded as “Europe’s Leading Destination Management Company 2024”.
On a country level, Greece received 34 distinctions for hotels, resorts, destinations and tourism and travel companies. Among the winners were the islands of the South Aegean (Cyclades and Aegean islands), honoured with the title of “Greece’s Leading Island Destination 2024”; Metsovo, Region of Epirus, applauded as “Greece’s Leading Mainland Destination 2024”; and Hertz, named “Greece’s Leading Car Rental Company 2024”.
