Kamena Vourla Thermal Springs’ revival
Kamena Vourla are in the center of Greece. Location-wise, they are particularly privileged, due to their vicinity to Sporades island group and many other hotspots of tourist interest, such as Thermopylae, Delphi, or Pavliani. Sea-wise, they are just 10 minutes by boat to Lihadonisia islets, also known as the «Seychelles of Greece»! These small island formations called Lihades and Strogyli islands or Lihadonisia, are located only 10 nautical miles from Kamena Vourla and are beautiful formations with amazing green waters and many small beaches with golden sand. According to mythology, a giant called Lichas dueled against Hercules, son of Zeus. Hercules defeated him and scattered his remains into the sea. Thereafter his body parts created Lichades and his head became Strogyli island…
Kamena Vourla, became particularly well-known as a cosmopolitan tourist destination in the 1960s when important figures of the time began to visit, such as the then Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis, the King of Saudi Arabia Ibn Saud, the King of Libya Idris, as well as Aristotle Onassis. During summer, well-known artists and orchestras from Athens entertained the thousands of vacationers in the beach resorts. In 1961, one of the most iconic comedies of Greek cinema, the movie «Clearchos, Marina and Shorty» by Finos Films, was filmed at the «Radion Hotel».
Two unique examples of Bauhaus architecture
«Radion» and «Thronion» hotels, part of the complex of buildings that formed the core of the thermal springs resort of Kamena Vourla, were the «trademarks» of the location from the 1930s to the 1980s.
They are considered «architectural jewels» and among the most typical Bauhaus buildings erected in Greece during the interwar period. They were designed by the architect Gerasimos Molfesis in the 1930s and were a point of reference for Kamena Vourla and a point of attraction for Athenians in post-WWI Greece.
The «Radion» opened its doors in 1930, took its name from the radioactive waters of the thermal springs, and ceased operation in 1989, while the «Thronion» was built a few years later and ceased operation in the mid-80s. These emblematic buildings, classified as «modern monuments» by the Ministry of Culture, will soon be revived by Mitsis Hotels Group, creating of a state-of-the-art Wellness Center, bringing to the area its former glory.
Through a 50-million-euro investment plan for the revival of the thermal springs of Kamena Vourla, with a total area of 475,000 sq.m., Mitsis Hotels Group aims to revitalize the wider area and strengthen the local community. Specifically, Mitsis Hotels Group undertakes to complete the
