PARKOUR – “THE ART OF FLYING”

Parkour or “The Art of Flying,” is a non-competitive physical and spiritual art whose aim is the rapid, safe and optimal way to move from one place to another, using only human abilities. Originated and developed from France, Parkour combines elements of gymnastics, high jump, rock climbing and similar athletic fields. Inspired by the military training methods is a holistic training discipline using movement that developed from military obstacle course training. Practitioners aim to get from A to B in the most efficient way possible.

Workouts for physical fitness are assuming several forms and names with varying degrees of difficulties. Parkour is one among them.

This sport is based on the philosophy that the human body develops all the motivations to go to the desired destination as quickly and effectively as possible and is a lens of efficiency applied to every aspect of our movement through life.

Each year, many events are taking place throughout the world and as most free runners admit, a great place to practice parkour is Santorini. Santorini, formed by countless volcanic eruptions, is world-famous for its spectacular scenery and unique beauty. For these daredevil contestants, the curved white buildings which seem like a natural extension of the island represent an ideal challenge and they respond by offering thrilling performances against a sunset backdrop.

Hundreds of contestants from all over the world, along with their friends, meet up on here on this island. In fact, many free runners go to Santorini to practice parkour over the rooftops of Oia and Fira, having the Cycladic Island’s architecture as a backdrop, the athletes offered a spectacular show to the audience in front of the island’s caldera.

Not only is parkour a great way to get fit, it is also an important life skill.
