
PITTAKI STREET IN CENTRAL ATHENS
This quiet road of Athens was chosen by “Imagine the City” creative team, a non-profit organization, in cooperation with the creative design studio “Beforelight”, to implement an interesting urban experiment: One hundred and fifty lamps, hats, ceiling lights, sconces, and lanterns, all provided by the citizens themselves, illuminate Pittaki Street replacing municipal lighting.
Despite the fact that this traditional Athenian neighbourhood is a small street with gradually declining pedestrian traffic and an increased crime rate over the last years, Pittaki has been chosen for this urban regeneration, as it is the entrance to the Psyrri area and a connection with Ermou, the famous shopping street of Athens.
Pittaki Street has been transformed from a semi-lighted passage into a lively area, with a view to revamping and changing the image of a remote region by highlighting its unique identity. This light art installation has turned this poorly trafficked street of Athens to a charming alley, and a new meeting place filled with many bars and cafés, restaurants, vintage boutiques and shops, workshops etc.
