SAFE WATER SPORTS
Safe Water Sports is a non-profit social initiative aiming to provide information and raise public awareness on safety matters related to recreational water activities and water sports with emphasis on safety standards and the prevention of accidents.
It is estimated that approximately 50,000 Europeans (EE27) are injured annually while participating in recreational water sports and boating activities. Drowning is the second leading cause of deaths for children ranging from early infants years to 18 years of age. It has also been shown that local businesses that provide water related sports equipment or services have been associated with many injuries of varying type and form. However, such injuries most often are not triggered by faulty equipment or excessively dangerous conditions, but rather from the improper or inexperienced behavior of operators.
The adoption and implementation of safety regulations and standards in conjunction to providing detailed procedures and guidelines to all those involved in recreational water activities and sports will significantly reduce and prevent such injuries going forward.
