TAKE AN ECO-FRIENDLY VACATION
Choose eco-hotels
There are many eco-friendly hotels all over the world which is a great choice to offset those emissions you caused getting to the travel destination. Look for hotels and other accommodation with effective waste treatment systems that recycle and are energy efficient, and, where possible use environmentally friendly energy sources such as solar energy or hydroelectric power.
Be a responsible guest
- Respect the local environment
- Conserve water
- Limit energy use
- Dispose of sanitary waste properly
- Recycle and reduce
- Avoid damaging recreational activities
Choose an eco-friendly transportation method
You can start your mission to be an eco-friendlier traveller before you even hit the terminal. Try to avoid short haul (< 500 km) flights, and if you must fly, choose airlines with higher occupancy rates and more efficient aircraft. Whenever possible, opt for bus or train over planes for long distance eco-travel. A bus is even better than using or renting a hybrid car and should use just half the emissions the two would build up in the car.
Use public transportation
Next time you travel, if you can, skip the rent-a-car centre at the airport and instead utilize public transportation options at your destination. However, if exploring by foot, bike, or train isn’t an option for you, you can still be conscious of your impact on the environment.
Cocktails, sodas, orange juices and drinks, most of the times comes with a plastic straw. Try to bring your own straw, or just go straw-free. If you can go straw-less to be eco-friendlier when you travel, that’s great!
Pack lighter
This may seem insignificant, but packing lighter is a huge environmental impact. If your bag is lighter, means that the plane will weight 50lbs less, the bus you ride or the car you drive will be just as light, and each one of those changes means the fuel consumption will also be less.
Eat and drink locally
Buying or eating the local produce encourages the local businesses. Food is one of the “tastiest” ways to get to know a destination. So, get that palate on a hunger hunt!
