The Athens and Epidaurus Festival is the city’s annual arts festival and a highlight of the Greek summer calendar. With a legacy that spans more than sixty years, today it incorporates a full programme of music, theatre, dance and visual arts. Performances at the two ancient theatres of the Odeon Herodes Atticus and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus are highlights of the festival. Both are famous for their exemplary acoustics and many of the great works of classical playwrights, such as Sophocles, premiered at the Epidaurus Theatre in ancient times.
The 2022 festival reopens to live audiences, with performances by international musicians Patti Smith, Diane Krall, French Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and award-winning composer Max Richter at the landmark stage of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus beneath the Acropolis. Louise Bourgeois Maman Exhibition
Louise Bourgeois’s monumental sculpture Maman (1999) is brought to the Greek public by NEON and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), collaborating for the first time. This iconic giant spider — one of the works that made the artist internationally famous — will be on display at SNFCC’s Esplanade for a seven-month period, with free entry to the public.
Maman, standing at over 10 metres tall, was created for the Tate Modern’s first Turbine Hall commission in 2000 and was subsequently cast in an edition of bronze, stainless steel, and marble. Bourgeois stated that the work was symbolic of her mother, a weaver and tapestry restorer. With ten eggs in its abdomen, the sculpture embodies ideas of maternal protection.
Ejekt Festival
After 3 years, the festival returns to rock the entire city of Athens! MUSE, the absolute mega rock act of our era, at the height of their powers, will be the headlines of the festival.

The participants are the General Secretary of the Presidency of the Greek Democracy Vassilis Papadopoulos, the advisor to the former President of the United States Barack Obama Christopher Merrill, the former President of European Writers Union Jochen Kelter, the astonishing Maria Laina, the brilliant Dimitris Daskalopoulos among others. The opening event of the festival will take place in Heraklion, on May 18.
TEDxAthens turns 11, and it’s asking the big questions by tackling the Great Unknown. Can that be defined, we wonder? Can it be approached by notable speakers in a talk conference, even if it is the biggest one out there? Is the Great Unknown of a lasting nature or does it shift, and turn, and change with each generation? What once felt great and unknown to us, may not be on the list of a Gen Zer, we feel. You don’t have to come down that existential rollercoaster with us. TEDx knows how to make it all sound much more simple.
