THE MOST ICONIC CHRISTMAS TREES IN THE WORLD
Perhaps one of the most famous Christmas trees in the world, this year the Norway spruce at Rockefeller Center is 75 feet tall and is 45 feet wide. The brilliantly lit tree is a long-standing American tradition dating back to 1933 when construction workers were building Rockefeller Center. The tree typically has five miles of string lights and a 900-pound star topper made of 3 million Swarovski crystals. The lighting ceremony takes place in early December, and the Christmas tree stays lit and displayed until early January from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM every day.
Gubbio, Italy
In 1981, locals decided to illuminate Mount Ingino, a slope outside the Medieval town of Gubbio in Umbria. Each year the town’s residents, donors and visitors to the tree raise money for charity; this year funds will go to the international humanitarian organisation Save the Children. individual trees on the slopes of Mount Ingino are outfitted with an array of lights to create the stunning visual of a 2,000-foot Christmas tree spanning the mountain from base to peak. It’s always lit from December 7 through the first week of January.
Vilnius – Lithuania
While the outside is modern, the inside of the installation reveals a traditional tree.Visually, the Christmas tree looks like a surrealist picture – a modern 24-meter tall composition is surrounded by 6,000 live and fragrant branches decorated with almost 4 km of color-changing RGB Christmas lights, 800 silver ornaments, and 150 sq. m of shining mirrors. The state-of-the-art installation is twofold: the spatial placement of metal structures creates several mirror-adorned areas while the inside is made to look cosy, home-like, and intimate with a live Christmas tree decorated with pine cones and lanterns.
Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
Given the temperature of Brazil, they opted for a fir tree made of light. This tree is somewhat delusional. Indeed, it is located on a small artificial island giving the impression that the tree floats on the water! It holds the Guinness record for “the largest floating tree in the world”.
