TOP TRAVEL TRENDS IN 2020
Micro trips
Not everyone in the world has the time, money, or know-how to plan an extended vacation. That’s why 2020 is the year to embrace micro trips, short yet experience-dense mini vacations. More than half of the world’s travelers (56%) say that they plan to make more weekend trips in 2020. A micro vacation is a short yet dense vacation for a 3-4-day period, preferably out of home country.
Ecotourism
Travelers are recognizing the importance of environmental conservation and are increasingly seeking hotels which support environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism. Green travel refers to both ecotourism and sustainable travel and more and more travelers get behind the “go green” initiative in every aspect of their life, including travel. Hotels around the world are developing award-winning environmental and economic programs which support local economy and preserve local culture.
Transformative travel
Many people wish to feel as if they are making a difference to the world even when they are on vacation. It feels good to help other people and that is a 2020 travel trend that is going to take off in a big way. The transformative element might not just be about helping others, but also helping oneself. This could be by taking a small career break or by choosing destinations that are away from the touristy norm. This is a trend that we will see mostly in community work trips and yoga retreats.
Tasty travels
Good food and drink are highlights of any holiday, but 2020 looks set to take the foodies to even more delicious heights. Culinary experiences like cooking classes, private home dining and truffle hunting give food-lovers a memory that transcends a seat at the table.
Group getaways
Travelling in 2020 should be an opportunity to connect with like-minded people. One of the key motivations for travel next year will be to “celebrate a milestone”, what’s better than having your friends celebrate you in a foreign country? Take your group chats offline and you’re bound to make memories no-one will soon forget.
Experiential travel
Consumers are asking or looking for packages beyond packaged travel. Experiential travel is a form of tourism in which people focus on experiencing a country, city or place by actively and meaningfully engaging with its history, people, culture, food and environment. During 2020 travelers are going beyond the concept of relaxation, leisure, and traditional sightseeing. Almost two thirds of travelers value experiences higher than material possessions, which means that 2020 will see travelers packing to many different and authentic experiences.
Insta-Tourism
Instagram is undoubtedly one of the most influential social media platforms right now, and believe it or not, it is having a huge effect on travelers. Today travelers are inspired by media-fueled tourism posts, most platforms saturated with selfie-snapping socialites sharing their perfect travel experiences. Seeing real people travel and take real snapshots of their destinations seems to be much more trustworthy for travellers today than looking through brochures.
